Our Native American Adoption Story

Throughout 2008 and 2009 we began participating in foster care of some children while we living in Minnesota.  During the summer of 2009, we met an older girl named Lafonda:

She was living in a town about 1 hour from where we living in a home for older girls.  She was originally from a tribe in Northwestern Minnesota called White Earth.

After meeting with Lafonda for a few weeks, we felt she could come live with us as a potential foster care placement.  We had a few good initial impressions and things felt like they may fit well, so we invited her into our family.  She was a bit hesitant at first, but initially agreed to give it a try.

She lived with us for about 1 year, but during the summer of 2009, we decided to move from Minnesota to Missouri as Scott's took a new job.  After much thought about the whole situation, we asked her to be a permanent part of our family and she agreed.  In the fall of 2009, we had the official adoption hearing in Fargo, ND, and Lafonda French was now Lydia Lafonda Nichols...
